Staying Ahead of Port State Control: EUROMAR's Proactive Safety Monitoring

23 Apr 2026

Port State Control detentions are rarely unexpected. The deficiencies that lead to them follow patterns, by port, by equipment type, by season. Identifying those patterns early is what allows ISM managers to act before an inspection, not after.

EUROMAR operates an automated monitoring system that tracks PSC inspection data in real time across the global fleet. The data feeds directly into regular analysis, which we use to identify port hotspots and recurring deficiency and detention trends, and to inform ISM managers accordingly.

The current analysis shows that the most common detainable deficiencies over the past 12 months relate to fire detection and alarm systems, fire drills and crew performance evaluation, emergency power sources, and oil filtering equipment.

On the port side, the analysis identifies ports worldwide where vessels face the highest combination of inspection volume, deficiency ratio and detention ratio. Chinese and Northern European ports feature prominently in the current data.

This information is shared proactively with ISM managers to support pre-port preparation. Maintaining that standing requires consistent attention, and that is what this monitoring is designed to support.
