One of the Biggest Shipping Events in the European Atlantic Region

13 May 2025

The second edition of Madeira Maritime Week will take place in Funchal from 19 to 23 May, with the flagship conference sessions on 20 and 21 May.

The event is hosted by the Regional Government of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, provided in collaboration with SDM – Sociedade Desinvolvimento da Madeira and organized by the European International Shipowners’ Association of Portugal (EISAP) in partnership with EUROMAR, the exclusive partner of SDM in the promotion of the International Shipping Register of Madeira, together with the international maritime and energy sector event organiser ship.energy, and WISTA – Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association.

This year, the conference will highlight Portugal’s growing presence in international shipping, with over 1,000 vessels now flying the Portuguese flag, a number expected to double in the near future.

The conference agenda will cover a wide range of key topics, including competitiveness in maritime transport, the decarbonisation of shipping, financing innovation and new technologies, safe and sustainable ship recycling, reducing administrative burdens in the sector, and the responsibilities and advantages of operating under a high-quality flag.

In addition, special sessions will focus on Sustainability in Maritime Transport and on Maritime Security issues. These discussions will offer participants an in-depth exploration of the most pressing issues in the industry – framed through a distinctly Portuguese perspective – while fostering the exchange of innovative ideas and practical solutions.

Nils Aden, newly elected President of the Shipping Association EISAP, states: “The Madeira Maritime Week 2025 will offer a valuable platform for bringing together key stakeholders from across Europe’s maritime transport sector and blue economy.

In recent years, Madeira and Portugal have become important centres for ship registration, supporting more efficient, sustainable, and digitalised maritime operations. To date, over 200 shipowners have registered more than 1,000 of their vessels under the Portuguese flag in Madeira. MMW25 will offer an excellent opportunity to highlight and celebrate this achievement.”

Key speakers at Madeira Maritime Week 2025 include numerous shipping companies from all over Europe, as well as the following:

  • Nils Aden, Managing Director of Harren Group and President of EISAP
  • Pedro Reis, Minister of Economy of the Portuguese Government (tbc)
