Vessel Registration Services

MAR is the International Ship Registry of Portugal, often referred to as the 'Madeira Ship Registry' as it is located on the island of Madeira and is open to shipowners worldwide.

Only commercial and recreational vessels can be registered with MAR and, in the case of the latter, with lengths above 7 metres. MAR registers vessels in terms of ownership registration, bareboat-in registration and bareboat-out registration. Bareboat-in and bareboat-out registration are possible for a term of up to 5 years. In regards to the owning entities, it is not mandatory to incorporate in Portugal or on Madeira to register a vessel. MAR accepts owning entities from all jurisdictions.

Our experienced, motivated and skilled team comprises of lawyers and industry insiders with ship management and onboard experience and is mainly based on the island of Madeira, close to the registry.

It is recommended to start the registration process around 6-8 weeks before the physical flag change to ensure all stakeholders are “on board” and to provide the necessary documentation. Flag changes “from one day to the other” are also possible. Vessel registration with EUROMARs team is efficient, professional and available 24/7 on request.

Registration Formalities

To accept a vessel, MAR considers the vessel’s performance and age, as well as the performance of the ISM manager.

Age

The following criteria related to the age factor of the ships are adopted by MAR:

Passenger ships and commercial yachts: max. 30 years (inclusive).

Oil tankers, chemical tankers, and gas carriers: max. 20 years (inclusive).

Other types of ships: maximum 15 years (inclusive).

The age limits may be extended on a case-by-case evaluation by MAR.

Surveys

Vessels to be registered may be subject to a pre-survey based on the ships' records, age, and detention history.
