Growth of the Portuguese Flag in the Shipping Industry

11 Feb 2024

12.02.2024 - Over the past year, Portugal has outperformed other major open flags in maritime registry growth. According to Clarkson's research, there was a 12.5% increase in gross tons. This achievement has positioned Portugal as the third largest EU flag.

This growth has been accomplished while maintaining fleet safety, highlighting Portugal's commitment to quality. The country's strict quality control measures ensure the registry admits only high-quality tonnage. Portugal's status on the white lists of both the Paris and Tokyo MOUs have contributed to its 2023 detention rates, placing Portugal at the lead in the Tokyo MOU region and second in the Paris MOU region.

Portugal extends its gratitude to the shipowners and managers for their support of the flag. Their role has been instrumental in achieving both growth and an exceptional safety performance.
